How to Create Photorealistic 3D Business Cards in After Effects

Static 2D mockups do not showcase brand identity design effectively. In this tutorial, you will build a clean, floating 3D business card commercial inside Adobe After Effects using the native Advanced 3D composition renderer, true shape extrusion, a procedural shadow catcher, and environment lighting — without any third-party plugins.

Advanced 3D Renderer

Native extrusion depth, surface shininess, and realistic HDRI environment lighting.

Two-Sided Sandwich Rig

Front and back pre-comps parented to an extruded rounded core with zero texture distortion.

Shadow Catcher Plane

Accepts Shadows: "Only" mode generates soft contact shadows over custom backgrounds.

1 Advanced 3D Engine & Extruded Core Setup

Create a new composition (1920x1080). Open Composition Settings (Ctrl + K), switch the 3D Renderer tab to Advanced 3D, and hit OK.

  • Import your card artwork and scale it down to fit neatly (S → around 9%).
  • Press Ctrl + R to show rulers, and drag guide lines tightly against all four edges of the card.
  • Double-click the Rectangle Tool to generate a matching shape layer and rename it depth.
  • Lower Opacity (T) to see the artwork below. Expand Contents > Rectangle 1 > Rectangle Path 1 and set Roundness to 57.
  • Select all layers (Ctrl + A) and toggle their 3D Layer switches on.
  • Expand depth > Geometry Options and set Extrusion Depth to 4.

2 Front/Back Faces & Flip Horizontal Fix

Pre-compose the artwork layers to establish clean front and back faces:

  • Right-click the front card > Pre-compose, choose "Leave all attributes", and name it front side.
  • Right-click the back card > Pre-compose, choose "Leave all attributes", and name it back side.
  • Open Material Options on both pre-comps and set Shininess to 61%.
  • Switch the viewport camera to Left View. Nudge front side slightly forward along the Z-axis, and back side slightly backward so they sandwich the extruded depth without overlapping.
  • Parent both front side and back side to the depth layer.

Mirrored Back Face Correction

Rotating the card 180° around the Y-axis reveals mirrored back artwork. Select back side, go to Layer > Transform > Flip Horizontal, and reset its rotation to restore correct orientation.

Select all three layers (front side, back side, depth), pre-compose them into a master comp named business card, toggle it to 3D, and click the Collapse Transformations (Sun/Star icon) switch.

3 Shadow Catcher & Environment Light

Build a floating shadow rig directly below the card:

  • Create a dark solid layer for the background, place it at the bottom, and lock it.
  • Double-click the Rectangle Tool, name the layer shadow catcher, make it 3D, and set X-Rotation to -86°.
  • In Side View, position the plane directly underneath the card.
  • Under Material Options, change Accepts Shadows to Only. The plane disappears, rendering only cast shadows.
  • Go to Layer > New > Light, choose Environment Light, and set its Y-Rotation to -97°.

Shadow Troubleshooting

If shadows do not appear, click on Render Options in the composition panel, select Fit to Scene, and hit OK to recalculate the environment bounds.

4 Two-Scene Camera Rigs & Keyframing

Create a 35mm Camera parented to a 3D Null named camera controller. Set the camera controller's X-Rotation to -6° and Y-Rotation to 80°.

Scene / Section Keyframe Timestamp Property Values Visual Result
Scene 1 0.00s → 0.20s → 1.00s X-Rotation: -86° → 47° → -10°
Z-Position: -6.5
Cinematic macro edge shot, subtle floating hover.
Scene 2 1.00s (Start) Reset angles (X: 0°, Y: 0°)
Env Light Y-Rot: -134°, X-Rot: 97°
Direct camera angle prepared for full reveal.
Scene 2 3.00s X-Rot: -80°, Y-Rot: -139°, Z-Rot: 4° Dynamic multi-axis card tumble.
Scene 2 4.50s → 5.12s Y-Rot: -190° → -213°, X-Rot: -23°, Z-Rot: 10° Continuous spin decelerating into frame.
Scene 2 6.16s (Hero Settle) Scale: 100%, X: 0°, Y: 0°, Z: 0°
Z-Position: -547 (Centered)
Card locks front and center in hero position.

5 Final Comp Cut, Logo Reveal & Speed Curves

Assemble the cut inside a new 10-second master comp named final comp:

  • Stack scene 2 on top of scene 1. Trim the in-point of scene 2 to start at exactly 1.00s.
  • Import your logo, apply a Fill effect, and set the color to pure white.
  • Keyframe Scale (70% → 12%) and Position as the card settles.
  • Press F9 to Easy Ease both keyframes, open the Graph Editor, and pull the right influence handle to the left for a smooth, high-impact snap.
  • Set the comp work area end to 8.5 seconds for final export.
