Protein Bar Motion Graphics Post in After Effects

Social media product posts are one of the highest-value deliverables in motion design for small brands. A static product photo gets scrolled past. An animated post — with floating ingredients, a swinging package, and typewriter text — stops the thumb. This tutorial shows you how to build exactly that, using only Adobe After Effects and a PSD source file.

What makes this workflow powerful is how little manual animation is required. The dry fruit elements float on their own using a single expression. The packaging swings using just three keyframes. The text reveals itself with a built-in preset. Most of the animation writes itself — you just set the rules.

Studies consistently show that animated content receives higher engagement on social platforms than static images — particularly in the food, health, and wellness categories. Protein bars, supplements, snack brands, and health product companies spend heavily on short animated posts for Instagram, Facebook Ads, and YouTube pre-rolls.

This is exactly the kind of work freelance motion designers get hired for. A local gym brand, a nutrition startup, or a health food store — these clients need animated social content regularly and rarely have in-house motion designers. Drop Shadow (Layer Style) — Applied three times on each dry fruit layer at different distances, opacities, and softness levels. Stacking multiple drop shadows creates a more believable depth than a single shadow ever could. The deepest shadow uses a brownish tint to warm the shadow colour and match the product packaging tone.

Rectangle Mask — Two rectangle shape layers clip the left and right edges of the protein bar packaging. Named Mask 1 and Mask 2, each is applied to one side of the package — giving the impression of a structured, contained product reveal rather than a floating image.

Null Object Parenting — Both the outer wrap and the inner protein bar layer are parented to a single Null Object. This means any rotation or position change on the Null moves the entire product group together. The Anchor Point is moved to the bottom of the Null so the swing pivots from the base — exactly like a pendulum.

Rotation Keyframes with Copy-Paste Loop — Three keyframes define one swing cycle: left → centre → right. That group of keyframes is copied and pasted forward in time repeatedly to create a continuous rocking motion. Easy Ease (F9) is applied to all keyframes so the swing decelerates naturally at each end.

Typewriter Preset — Found in the After Effects Animation Presets browser, this preset automatically types out text character by character. The keyframes are shifted in the timeline to make the text appear from the very start of the composition.

This tutorial uses one expression — applied to the Position property of every dry fruit layer to make them float automatically:

The smart part of this workflow is how the expression is applied. It is written once on a single layer, then copied as Expression Only (right-click → Copy Expression Only) and pasted onto all remaining dry fruit layers simultaneously. Every layer now floats independently — same rules, different random outputs, because wiggle() generates a unique random value per layer.
